Photographs, drawings, collage and painted colour studies are all part of Anne’s process. She works in sketchbooks gathering images, postcards and paintings on paper to form collections of colour, shape, texture and line.
Rather than use these works as preparatory images for a more formal version of the same image, they stand alone and provide inspiration and momentum for the work she does on board. That work tends to take longer and be more layered and considered, while the sketchbook works are spontaneous and speedily completed.
Anne’s layered style developed out of her love of printmaking while a student. The quick-drying nature of acrylic paint allows her to work quickly, building up and stripping away layers of colour; drawing and covering until the picture is complete. In this way a rich archeology lies under the surface, hinting at the history of the painting and the land it depicts.
